As the British weather has triumphantly morphed from Spring into Summer, this week Angry Baby is taking a look at five singles from five women that just feel right for Summer. Maaike Siegerist, Katie Kittermaster and Allegra have all featured here before, whereas Piera and Cassa Jackson are new artists for us.
Befitting Pride month, Piera leads us off with ‘Love Is Meant for You’ , an LGBTQ+ pride summer anthem bursting with effervescent joy that has you singing along. This is a song for everyone which celebrates the equality of universal love. ‘Love Is Meant for You’ is also for those that haven’t yet confessed to your crush, to your friend, someone you think you could never have.
The latest fun-filled anthem from Allegra is a kiss-off track in the form of ‘Used To Miss U‘. The self-empowerment anthem was written during the first lockdown about letting go of toxic people from the past, and looking forward to a brighter future. This track has everything – female attitude, relatable lyrics and an absolutely infectious hook that can’t help but get stuck in your head after just one listen.
On a similar theme, ‘Out Of Love’ may just be Katie Kittermaster’s most candid release to date. Flooded with buoyant piano melodies and dynamic percussion, the dreamy pop track, released on June 18, carries subtle electronic textures, culminating in a chilled bop. However, despite the sparkling sonic aesthetic, ‘Out Of Love’ dives into the dark depths of heart-break., accompanied by Katie’s breezy vocals that lend themselves to her authentic, story-telling lyricism.
Contrasting with these heartbreak songs is ‘Learning How To Love’ from Cassa Jackson. Released on June 25, the track reflects on the development of young love, depicting an imperfect relationship which overcomes the odds to remain true and beautiful. It’s a defiant song, one which works directly against the persuasive tug of social media to be unattainably perfect, and proves that beauty and strength in a relationship comes from hard work and dedication. At a young age, love and life are complicated things to navigate and Cassa has learnt that the ideal relationship is not perfect, but a process of learning how to love an entire person through the ups and the downs, combined with mutual love and support.
Completely different theme wise, is Maaike Siegerist’s ‘Call of the Last Wildcat’, an ode to the Scottish Wildcat, an untameable animal on the brink of extinction. Maaike says: “I wrote ‘Call of the Last Wildcat’ when I was visiting the Cairngorms two years ago. The landscape was breath taking – so beautiful and rugged! There was a drawing of a Scottish Wildcat in the cottage where I was staying. It made me curious, so I read up on them. They’re fierce animals – I could imagine them hunting in the forests. But they’re on the verge of becoming extinct. All of that came together when I picked up my guitar and started writing.” All proceeds from the track will go to Saving Wildcats.
