We’ve almost made it – the end of 2020 is in sight and in just a few days, the joys of Christmas will be upon us. This year, more than any other year, being together, having fun and celebrating the goods things in life is so important and we at Angry Baby hope you have a great time, whatever your Christmas looks like. Of course, Christmas would not be the same without Christmas music, whether old or new (click here for 2019’s list) and so I’ve spent a very enjoyable few hours finding these festive tunes – enjoy!
First up, we have 80’s icon Limahl, with a lovely new song for Christmas, ‘One Wish for Christmas’. It’s got the evergreen Christmas song themes of love and happiness and is a warm track that already feels like a classic. Christmas and love also go hand in hand with Natalie Nicole Gilbert’s ‘Wrapped Up In A Dream Of You’, whilst Zoe Scott wraps her smooth vocals around a lovely version of Nat King Cole’s ‘The Christmas Song‘
Joining the traditional sound and feel is an original song from Alfie Boe and Michael Ball’s Together at Christmas album, ‘My Christmas Will Be Better Than Yours‘, a swing infused track that gives us everything we want in a Christmas song, with the added extra that the two voices are having so much fun.
Most people have long discovered that Dolly Parton is a living legend and an all around wonderful person, but 2020 seems to have confirmed it. Not content with helping to fund a Covid-19 vaccine, Dolly has also released a new album of Christmas songs, some in collaboration with others and the one I’ve picked to share with you is the duet with Miley Cyrus, ‘Christmas Is...’. Warm and melodious, it’s full of trademark Dolly sounds.
Barbara Borgelin combines fun with love and happiness with the incredibly catchy ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You‘ and is a great alternative to that other song of that name. Julia Jade brings us a stripped back festive song that celebrates a Christmas like none we’ve seen before and has a really cute chorus line in ‘I’ll Be Your Christmas Tree‘. If upbeat pop is your thing then Sir Duke’s ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ is a rip roaring track with huge danceability.
If there’s one thing that Christmas songs have shown us over the years (with the notable exception of Fairy Tale of New York), it’s that traditional, singalong sounds are just what is needed. Bucking that trend and taking after the aforementioned Christmas classic from The Pogues, is Jack Simpson’s ‘Shopping for Xmas’ that tackles the consumerisation of Christmas as opposed to reason for celebration – it’s a fun trip through our high streets and again, so, so catchy.
Lastly in 2020, we wrap up with an Angry Baby regular, President Street, who have given us this acoustic cover of John Lennon’s ‘Happy Christmas (War is Over)’, from what looks like their backyard in Australia – lucky them!
Have a great Christmas and New Year and we’ll see you on the other side with more great new music.
